As Jews, we recount Prophetic stories that teach us to live towards Justice. The Prophetic message is speaking loud and clear through Black voices in this country when they say “We Can’t Breathe, Enough, and Black Lives Matter”. The question is, will we listen, will we respond, and how? And, the truth is that racism and white supremacy are not just problems somewhere else, but they are also right here in Ithaca and at TVO.
We will bear witness to the pain, the trauma, the harm, and dehumanization that racism and white supremacy causes. We will hold space for the marginalized voices who are most directly impacted to be heard if they choose to and feel safe enough. For those of us who are white, or hold social identities of power and privilege, we will reflect on the part we each play in this country’s centuries long emergency of racism. We will hold the group with loving care as we listen, reflect, interrogate, and challenge each other through an imperfect, sometimes messy, process towards an anti-racist practice. We will harness the wisdom and experience of the group. We will introduce and practice basic dialogue and communication skills and principles that might help us work toward addressing white supremacy and racism as it shows up in ourselves, in the TVO community, in Ithaca and beyond.
