SUMMARY:Selichot Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Led by Dalya Tamir\nT'shuva is the act of return. During this t
ime of year we are called to return to parts of ourselves that reflect the
sacred within us. We are called back to ourselves in many ways and for ma
ny reasons\, one of them is the longing to feel at home within ourselves.
In this participatory workshop\, as part of our practice of selichot we ar
e invited to explore ways in which we have abandoned ourselves by judging
ourselves harshly\, by holding ourselves back with self doubt\, by overext
ending ourselves\, and other ways that are true for each of us.\nTogether
we will form a kavanah to no longer abandon ourselves in those ways. Inste
ad\, through the practices of mindfulness\, self-compassion\, and lovingki
ndness\, we will begin the journey back to our wise and compassionate self
\, the part of ourselves that remembers our innate goodness.\nThis program
will include presentation and discussions\, short meditation periods\, sh
aring in small groups\, and some movement. We ask that the content shared
by the participants will be kept confidential.

SUMMARY:Kabbalat Shabbat (Welcoming Shabbat)
DESCRIPTION:Led by Rabbi Lenore Bohm and Sue Horowitz\n\nContext: Hallel co
nsists of six Psalms (113–118)\, which are recited as a unit on joyous o
ccasions including each day of the Three Pilgrimage Festivals (Passover\,
Shavuot\, and Sukkot)\, as well as at Hanukkah and Rosh Chodesh. Tradition
ally\, the mood of Hallel is rejoicing\, but can we rejoice in the midst o
f despair and grief? This was a question many in the Jewish community aske
d during this past year on each holy day\, and on many Shabbatot. We felt
profound sadness as the war in Israel/Palestine raged on\, and dozens of h
ostages returned murdered or lingered in hellish captivity.\n\nHow do we e
xperience and express joy when we feel broken\, shattered and filled with
trepidation?\n\nA few years ago\, before the events of Oct. 7 were seared
into Jewish consciousness\, talented singer/songwriter Sue Horowitz compos
ed a piece entitled “Hallel in a Minor Key.”  This mix of celebration
and sadness is how many of us approached each holy day in 2024/5784. And
it is the only way some of us can face Sukkot/Simchat Torah this year.\n\n
Oct. 18 is the Shabbat that precedes Simchat Torah. For some of us\, “Ha
llel in a Minor Key” strikes the appropriate balance between rejoicing a
nd sadness: we will praise and we will weep.\n\nEcclesiastes is the megill
ah read during Sukkot. It says: “There is a time for everything (includi
ng) a time for weeping and a time for laughing\, a time for wailing and a
time for dancing.”\n\nThis is our charge for the Shabbat during Sukkot
 – to weep and to laugh\, to wail and to dance. Along with Sue’s heartf
elt music\, and traditional and contemporary  prayers/readings\, we will
honor those who were killed on Simchat Torah or died afterwards from injur
y\, mistreatment\, and disease.   Carrying the Torah scroll\, in silence\
, we will dance like those at the Nova Festival before they were hunted do
wn or kidnapped\, and like those at synagogues across Israel before their
dancing was interrupted by wrenching news and unquenchable pain.\n\nJoin u
 s for a SILENT HAKAFAH\, a moving\, heartfelt dance around the synagogue\,
to evoke memory and hope\, celebration and sadness.\n\nMost Shabbat servi
ces at Tikkun v'Or are held in person at on Zoom. Contact info@tikkunvor.o
rg for more information and links.

SUMMARY:Kabbalat Shabbat (Welcoming Shabbat)
DESCRIPTION:Shabbat / Simchat Torah led by Lauren Korfine\n\nPlease join us
as we welcome Shabbat\, sing\, pray\, and dance with the Torah. On Simcha
t Torah\, we celebrate life and learning and the cycles of our Jewish life
as we roll the Torah back to the beginning to read it through again with
eyes fresh from the work of Yom Kippur\, and ready for the year ahead. We
will be present with the pain of last year’s Simchat Torah (that fell on
the 7th of October) and also call in the joy that lives side by side with
sadness and grief\, that together we might live into the phrase that we c
hant at the end of reading a book of Torah: chazak\, chazak\, v’nitchaze

SUMMARY:Shabbat Morning Service
DESCRIPTION:Led by Rabbi Lenore Bohm and Lauren Korfine\n\n\nPlease join us
as we bring in Shabbat morning and the new month of Cheshvan with song\,
prayer\, Torah\, and community. We will consider the story of Noah\, who i
s called to create a place of shelter in a time of great darkness and chao
 s. Into the ark\, Noah is instructed to make a tsohar\, a window\, into
which the light might shine. It's interesting that Noah is told to make a
"tsohar" (the only time this word is used in the Hebrew Bible) but then
is said to open the "chalon\," which remains the word for "window" to thi
 s day in Hebrew.\n\n\n\nIs a "tsohar" a different kind of window\, perhaps
something providing a spiritual opening? There are windows through which
one can see outside but nobody outside can see in. Does this describe you
or someone you know? What do windows symbolize to you?\n\nMost Shabbat se
